There are other reasons why I don’t post much anymore.
Three months ago, Yahoo! Photos
Director of Yahoo! Photos: So, I heard you made gay porn sites.
[Ernie spits out his morning latte, and then checks to see if the conference room directly across from him full of executives. Thankfully, the room is empty.]
Ernie: (I’m fired I’m fired I’m so fired)
Director: [a co-worker] told me about your weblog. I checked it today. Pretty funny stuff.
Ernie: (Did I write anything bad I don’t think I wrote anything bad how about any classified information no I don’t think I did)
Director: OK, back to work. Don’t forget the 1pm meeting today.
Voice over the cubicle wall: You fired yet?
Ernie: Uhm, don’t think so.
Voice: cool. [sound of keyboard typing]
Earlier tonight, Yahoo! Assasins
Manager: You know what the weird thing about blogging is, Ernie? I don’t know how bloggers have the time and energy to sit down and write a weblog post.
Ernie: …
Manager: I’m not talking about you, of course.
Ernie: Of course.
Manager: I mean, I should know. I have your RSS feed on my My Yahoo! page.
Ernie: Uhm. You do?
Manager: Yep. Every time you write a weblog post, it notifies me. And you haven’t written much lately. That means we’re keeping you busy.
Ernie: Mmm. Good to know. [shifts in seat uncomfortably]
Hey, look up in the sky! It’s a giant microscope, and it’s looking right at me.
Scary! Oh God, the words “back to work!” said by a manager just horrified me. Until I got to the part where you mentioned a “voice over a cubicle.” Aaaayyyiiiiiii!!!!!!
Ernie, I was jealous of you ’cause I’m sure you make more money than me and are getting a house and stuff but…Are you sure you want that job? Making porn sites sounds way better. If you can work on your own time…outside a cubicle.
Without revealing too much about my project… I have no regrets about going to Yahoo!, especially working on the project I’m working on now.
As far as LYD, I’d rather have co-workers (and bosses… and bosses of bosses…) know about it instead of keeping this blog one dirty secret and having someone found out and me getting into all this work-related drama.
Am I being cryptic enough yet? Hello, bosses of bosses reading this website!
I had similar feelings, so I started posting over on livejournal where I could make things viewable only to people on my friends list.
…and then someone on my friends list got promoted and is now my boss. Doh!
I’ve got *exactly* the same issues myself. And I think I lost a promotion because of my blog. Doh!
EEP! When I was still blogging to “Diary of Elle Wiz,” I got busted for spending too much time on blogger.com! I don’t know if my boss knows about my current page, Lost Another Me, or how to subscribe to RSS feeds.
Yep. I have freaked out a couple of times, after ranting on some work connection and then they suddenly fax over the missing documents or there’s this search on Korea Yahoo… Scaaa-ryyyyyy
But as to top secret, am always cautious ablout some of my friends’ work or comments, they are in your line of work… and I don’t want them to find me divulgating their work gossip!!!
Balls…
You know, I work pretty long hours and if my boss ever told me I shouldn’t have time to blog (he wouldn’t because he rules, but I’ll be hypothetical), I would say “You know, I work hard for you, but you do give me a few hours a night to sleep, and I choose to use part of that time to blog instead.” Heh.
Do not cave in to their jealousy. They cannot play BIG BROTHER to your wonderful self…and deprive your loyal followers. Remember THEY have a private life too…or maybe they don’t…and are just riotously jealous of yours! Do not bend to them Ernie, you are better than that…and can show it by blogging a little more…uh…
just so they’ll know they aren’t in control.
What is this, Office Space? No no no, coworkers need to stay out of my blog reality.
I think it’s a high compliment from your bosses, even if it is bizarre.
See, there’s not even freedom of speech online anymore. Thanks America, Inc.
Warped as it is (and I fully realize how crazy I am) one of the things I was looking forward to in the new job (going into my 3rd month) was the fact that none of my coworkers know about my blog. My supervisor found out about my main site and that bugged me plenty. No way would I want her to be reading my blog. Even though she seems pretty open-minded and probably wouldn’t care one bit. I just need to compartmentalize certain parts of my life. And for me, blog and co-workers are not a good mix.
Yeah… I hope none of my bosses read my blog, but if they do… i hoep they ahve a good sense of humor.
hey ernie, came across your blog today and posted on mine about it
check it out.
I think everyone at my small company of 40 knows about my blog and I even wrote about work there once or twice and no one battered an eyelid, if the company is laid back enough then hey what the hell?
