California and a Shiny New Quarter

Vote for the State Quarter of California. If I didn’t know anything better about the state that I have lived in my entire life, I would assume that California is nothing but the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is nice, mind you, but it’s known in my inner circles as “that damn bridge,” the bridge that I barely drive over but am obligated to show my friends who are visiting from out-of-state. It’s used in sentences such as: “There’s the damn bridge. Okay, now I’m gonna show you that damn prison island and after that, I’m taking you on those damn cable cars to that damn touristy Chinese spot.” As someone who is born and raised Californian, I should know what appropriate imagery should be put on a coin to most accurately reflect our state. Here are my suggestions:

  • Oakland Raiders fans, doing what they do best — eating their children as a sacrifice to their devil god. (This post by Andre is right on the money.)
  • Immigrant Crossing Road Sign. One actually exists in Southern California. Thanks, Don!

  • Illegal immigrants, crossing a busy highway.
  • Former dot-commers, jaded of their life in the Silicon Valley (possible models: him or her or him.)
  • Imagery of Asians, Latinos, Caucasians and African Americans, to show the diverse representation of our multi-ethnic state. For additional accuracy, they should all be cutting each other off in traffic, flipping each other off and threatening to kick each other’s ass.

Any other suggestions?
