So I’m at Fry’s with Belinda yesterday night, looking for a how-to manual on Flash 5. (I eventually walk out of the store getting a book on Java and Black and White, which shows everyone how fickle I am about impulse purchases.) “Hey Bel,” I say from across the aisle. “I should’ve just stolen all the tech books when I got laid off.”

“Yeah, you should have,” says the nerdy (but cute) guy reading a book on ColdFusion. When then get in a 15 minute conversation about the Allaire-Macromedia merger, its effects on the consulting industry and networking opportunities at various Flash roundtables throughout the Bay Area. He leaves, I smile and wave goodbye.

“Goddamn,” I say to Belinda. “He was cute.”
“I know. I could see the drool from where I was standing. Kinda pathetic, actually.”

And then it hits me: I’m cruising for guys at a Fry’s Electronics store. God save my soul.
