Ernie’s Guide to Chinese Restaurant Prosperity

Asks Steve:

Oh Ernie.. I have to ask you something … What is it with Chinatown and store names like “Very Trendy Fashions” , and “Delicious Food Grocery Store” and “Gorgeous Pretty Beauty Nail Salon”? I don’t want to sound racist, I’m just wondering why it is.

In a nutshell? A lot of store owners don’t speak English, and just name their stores in Chinese. The ones that do have “English” names for their stores do it as an attempt to drive in more customers (read: white people.) The exception to the rule is, of course, Chinese restaurants. In that case, they use one of the following formulas for Chinese restaurant prosperity:

Look at me, I’m a consultant. That’ll be fifteen hundred dollars.
