You know what would be cool? Web services for Evite.
Evite, of course, is the online invitation website that everyone and their mother seems to be a part of. This week alone, I’ve gotten an Evite for an Indian wedding reception, a party where the theme is “circus freaks,” and a group outing to see a musical.
(Yeah, that pretty much sums up my life in a nutshell.)
Web services are a bit tougher for me to explain to a non-techie without going into example. Amazon.com offers web services, and with it developers have been able to make cool little things like the ability to steal images of their favorite books, incorporating it into their own websites to make a cheap buck via their affiliates program.
Now, what would be cool — a way to export a list of all my upcoming events in an XML file and embed it in this website somehow! Then you can find out all the major events I’m attending…
…and stalk me. Hrm. Well, okay, this might not be the greatest idea, ever since I had an LYD reader find my phone number and call my house while he was high on crystal meth. (Nice guy, though, and at least he wasn’t on acid.) But it would still be a fun project for someone, I guess. Lazyweb, I invoke thee!
Which brings me to LazyWeb. I mean, how cool is that? You bring up an idea for a project, and someone either tells you where it exists or they create the project for you.

BTW, do you think you could get a different color scheme for your comments box? Maybe put a border-top or border-bottom attribute for each comment so it doesn’t run together so much…

They may already have something underway. You can incorporate My Evite into your My Yahoo whcih presumably uses some form of “web services”.
The problem with Evite is that it truly could be pulled off by a coupla coders in a garage. Evite has hardly evolved in 3+ years and is so littered with cruft.

I use Tasks (http://www.alexking.org/software/tasks/), which meshes very nicely with PHP iCalendar. Give it a look.

Here’s an idea for a web service (or something), audio commments for your blog. We can call a number and leave comments, and people can click on them to play them back in their browsers. We’ll all be high on crystal meth of course.

Well, maybe I’m missing something here… but… when I get an e-vite I have an option to add the event to my microsoft outlook canerdar. Couldn’t you then just publish your calendar? I know I’m missing something, but I’d suggest anything to get another way to find out where I could stalk Ernie….

Actually, right now I don’t use *any* type of datebook software, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to start… I just haven’t seen a software I really liked. Making my own web-based one has croosed my mind (scott from scottandrew.com has done this already) but i’m up to my neck in projects.
