how to decentralizawha? huh?
So, I guess I can officially say that I’ll be speaking on a panel at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas next month on - of all things - “How to Leverage Decentralized Social Networks.”
No, seriously. Even I assumed that if I were to ever speak in a tech conference, it would be on gays, asians, blogs or gaysianblogs(tm). Not to say that I’m not grateful for Tantek for the opportunity, but I’ll be in some VERY smart company - Tantek, Joyce Park, Jonas Luster and Danah Boyd - and between those four people, I think there are 175 post-graduate degrees.
When I told my co-worker that I was going to be on a speaking panel, the first thing he said was to never say, “I don’t know why I’m on this panel.” So I’ll instead say that I plan on speaking on the panel representing the people - the mainstream demographic that many exist social networking services cater to. People could talk about graph theory until the cows come home, but it’ll be for naught if the Brazillians (Orkut) or the thousands of Asians that typed in MixEd KaPPz (Friendster) don’t use them, right? And if the conversation goes dry, hopefully someone attending will scream out the word “FISTING” so I can toss a chair into the audience.
