A weblog by Ernie Hsiung

So, uhm, I’ve changed this weblog around a little bit.

  • This weblog uses Moveable Type now, thus emulating every single
weblogger ever and jumping on a the big fat nerd bandwagon. It also features a mini-blog, which is a way to
post technical links and stuff that people have forwarded to me but
I hadn’t been able to think of anything witty to say to it.

  • There is also a way to change the skin of LYD, if you don’t like
how the website looks. If you notice carefully, you’ll notice that I now
use a background pattern from squidfingers for
the “Goodbye, Dignity” screen. Everyone seems to be using background patterns lately —
remember when everyones weblogs were all minimalist and white and boring and shit, and
web designers were all, “oooh! We’re so zen! Minimalism is the wave of the future!”

Then the stock market crashed, people went to war and no one gave a fuck anymore. The End.

  • Archives from the Blogger days are not online yet, mostly because there would be
    broken image and link locations.
    Patience, grasshopper.

  • I have gotten rid of that cartoon character (Dexternie) that
I’ve had at the top of the weblog for the past 2.5 years. Before
people start yelling and screaming bloody murder, I have this to
    say: Move on.

I knew it was time to remove the cartoon character when someone
recognized my weblog at a party, came
up to me in person and said, “OHMYGOD, YOU LOOK JUST LIKE THE
    CHARACTER ON YOUR WEBSITE!”

Now, let’s think about this. Dexternie is a
caricature of myself. They didn’t say the cartoon guy looks at me, but
    the other way around
. So, people are saying that I look like
something that is supposed to look like me, like a wacky animated
chartoon character writing about his bizarre life and I was just a bad
flesh-and-blood knock-off poser. Be like your cartoon! Dance, monkey, dance!

  • Believe you me, I will be adding and changing more and more things
to this website over the next couple of days, so bear with me.

Comments and suggestions appreciated.

Very sophisticated. I like Sultry Ernie up the top.

Good to see you back up and running!

  4. I miss the cartoon, but I really like the photo in your banner.

I hope you put your “50 things about me” back up (and add 50 more) — most people’s put me to sleep, but I found yours fascinating and strangely touching. It actually inspired me to write my own!

Good job moving over to MT — it’s the bomb!

  5. TC says:

Oh my god. We were just IMing and you said “I just published LYD” and within one minute, after being offline for what, a month, there are already four comments. Amazing.

I still think the TV image looks like you’re doing something unmentionable behind the podium, though.

  6. vince says:

IT looks fantastic, and I think you will be much happier using MT. Now that you have joined the collective, and been assimilated, you will no longer be little, yellow or different.
I don’t miss the cartoon either.. It always made me jealous, cause I don’t have one

    Welcome back!

Yes. The use of CSS has definitely turned most of our sites into similar looking beasts.

I do like it though Mr. E.

Welcome back Ernie! I like the new design.

  21. Geoffrey says:

Welcome back, buddy! The Web wasn’t the same without ya.

  22. ernie says:

For the record – LYD *will* accept Trackback pings. It will list them at the end of each post, similar to plasticbag.org. At least I think so, anyway. I could have gotten things wrong.

  23. Daejin says:

Thank god you’re back. Personally like the juvvy hall, puke olive color but it screams for a background pattern (you know, like everyone else) Welcome back!

  24. j-notes says:

“Back to life, back to reality.” Welcome back!!! Your site looks great!

    *mwah*

  28. lyn says:

    welcome back, ernie.

You know, I thought I saw your caricature driving an SUV behind me the other day…

  29. Hey I dig the new layout. A bit more formatting for the text in the comment popup but pretty damn good.

Have you thought about using Trackback?

You also have some XHTML validation snafus but I am just being a web bitch.

  30. And I do miss cartoon Ernie.

  31. Ken says:

Where are the naked picture galleries?

  32. john says:

one suggestion, two words: porn links.

  33. April says:

The small type of the permalinked date and comments is a mite too small on my Mac right now, but everything else looks wonderful.

I, too, will miss the caricature, but the photo of you grimacing on TV more than makes up for it.

  34. Eddie Song says:

Whoa… I’m locked in the office for a month working late hours, and come back to a complete change in all the blog sites… Dang! Nice work yo!

  35. d says:

Like the new look…. love the fact that Dexternie is GONE…. I’ve so moved on….
    ;)

  36. Lil says:

I’ve chosen the “Weakest Link” skin because it makes me giggle. Welcome back, sweetie.

  37. pammy says:

    yay, you’re back! :)

  38. That is A Lot of Tasty Links!

Yo Yo Yo this is a ping for Ernie. I had to view source to find this.

  39. leslie says:

Hi Ernie… just wanted to say that the site looks great. I’ve missed reading your hilarious stories and laughing, um… *with* you.

Movable Type really is cool- I just started a few months ago with version 2.63. If you’re having trouble with the configuration, I’d be happy to help you.

Take care and happy blogging. :)

  40. PatCH says:

I love big fat nerd wagons. They’re my favourite kind of nerd wagons to jump on…

At least I’ve kept some Photoshopped images of TCG (the cartoon guy) on my site…

    ^^^^^^^^
    shameless plug

  41. kungfukitten says:

Welcome back! I love the new look! I just wish I was nerdy enough to jump on the big fat nerd wagon. (that is as fun to say as it is to type) Instead I use a pre-made interface. *sigh*

  42. Paris says:

THANK GOD YOU’RE BACK. I can slack off at work again.

  43. Lauren says:

welcome back darlin’. I’m jumping on the big fat nerd wagon with y’all, if that’s ok…

  44. Jen says:

    Very snazzy new look!

  45. Lily says:

Hmm…minimalistic and white. Sounds a bit (a lot) like my blog.
Welcome to the world of movable type. You know that you love it, even if it is incredibly conformist and increasingly mainstream. Always look on the bright side: it may be conformist, but not nearly as much as Livejournal.

  46. Gwen says:

Cmon now. Minimalism is so retro it’s cool again.

    Hmph.

And a big welcome to the cult fabulous world of MT.

  47. heather says:

wow, I like this erndawg! btw, big ups to j-note(s?) for the soul II soul thing, I think I heart you now. I was patiently waiting last night for you to get this thing online. Welcome back!

  48. Katherine says:

OMG! You’re back. I’m so happy. :-) Now I can go on with *my* life. ;-)

  49. l33t k1w1 says:

I’ve yet to jump on the ‘big fat nerd bandwagon’. I’m still using Greymatter and considering shifting programs in the next few months.

  50. I didn’t see it coming

One of my favorite blog reads from way back when, little. yellow. different. Has made the move to MT as well. Ernie is the last person I’d expect to move to MT and he has skinned his site as well….
