the go game

I usually don’t plug stuff, but if you are in the Bay Area, have $25 and a sense of adventure, The Go Game is having another community game in Palo Alto on May 31st.

For those that haven’t heard of The Go Game, it’s a bizarre mix between a digital photo scavenger hunt, Mission Impossible, The Amazing Race and a self-inflected humiliation ritual. You’re split up into teams, given a cellphone and a digital camera, and “missions” are given to the team via the cellphone. Do the missions, get the points, most points wins, yadda yadda yadda.

Sometimes, the missions involve something relatively simple: answer a trivia question, run to a famous landmark and punch in the name of the cross-street.

Ernie, getting blasted by silly-string

Other missions are a little bit more… interesting, as you can tell from the photo on your right. (That’s silly-string, by the way. Not vomit. Or anything else. Pervs.) I will admit though — it’s kinda fun running around a high-tourist area drenched in silly-string, while Italian and Japanese tourists aren’t quite sure whether to stare or ignore, quietly assuming to themselves that all Californians are clinically insane. (We are.)

The SF Chronicle does a better job explaining the game than I ever could. I’m already on a team, but get a friend or two and sign up! Should be fun.

if you like running around in high tourist areas while people take a picture of your weirdness, you should run at next year’s urban iditarod.

What’s to keep me from just stealing the digital camera and going home?

Scott: They take your credit card and return it to you after the game is over.

okay, I saw a lot of vomit when I was still living in SF (upper/lower haight–and on lombard) and that really does look like vomit on you, ernie. yucky!

game sounds like a blast though–one more temptation to move back… but still not enough.

I think Ernie just has a bad case of button envy ;) It hasn’t gone THAT terribly wrong has it? Okay, I got 90 buttons in the last 4 days, you are completely right, it is getting out of control.

Ha! I’m coming up from LA to burninate you fools!
Any advice (beyond “be perfect”)? I know we’re on competing teams, but perhaps you’ll throw a newbie a bone?

I’ve been wanting to do one of these for *ages*! Too bad there are no team slots left… I have a crowd that would love to play.
