the reason why i downloaded iTunes…

… is because of the “Top 25 Most Played” playlist. Yes, I know, I’m lame.

But when I was younger, I was fascinated with keeping lists, especially with songs that I heard on the radio. Like, I would hear Casey Casem’s syndicated radio show and I’d pretend that Casey would rank my 40 favorite songs. And then he would read one of those dedications on the radio, and I would pretend that someone would care enough to dedicate a song to me, and then I would cry and cry.

Uhmm… where was I? Oh yeah, iTunes.

I think of myself as someone who likes a lot of different types of music - there’s 6 gigs worth of music on my computer of different genres, although I’ve been gravitating towards more soul and downtempo. You know, stuff you hear in lounges. Stuff that makes you a hipster.

So imagine my horror when I list my top 10 MP3’s in order:

  1. Joss Stone, “Fell In Love With A Boy”
  2. BoA, “Kimochi Wa Tsutawaru”
  3. Moloko, “Familiar Feeling (Timo Maas remix)”
  4. Basement Jaxx “Lucky Star (Jaxx Klub Remix)”
  5. BT, “somnambulist”
  6. Res, “Ice King”
  7. Chihiro Onitsuka, “Shine”
  8. Crusho, “Kool Bavaria (Patchworks Remix)”
  9. Gotan Project, “Una Musica Brutal”
  10. Hikaru Utada, “traveling”

Great. Six out of my top 10 songs are either J-Pop or mid-tempo House tracks. It’s like I can’t decide whether I want to be a circuit queen or a Japanese girl.

Gee, maybe I should get some sleep.

It’s important to note that I deliberately left out a bunch of tracks from artists that are already on this list. But considering that #3 was a song by BoA called “Shine We Are!,” I felt like I’ve been humiliated enough already.

My iTunes Top 25 includes the new Clay Aiken single “Invisible”, so who am I to judge?

If you like the top 25 playlist, you really need to use and abuse the smart playlists!

http://www.smartplaylists.com/

My favorite use of smart playlists: “neglected favorites”. The conditions are: rated 4 or 5 stars and not played within the past 3 weeks. Another good use is “never played”: with conditions of play count less than one.

Of course, these are only useful if you have a hefty collection of music.

Actually Jimbo… I do have an iPod. It’s a simple 10gig model, but it’s still an iPod. And it integrates with iTunes better than MusicMatch Jukebox does.

Shhhh. It’s our little secret.

hey now, what’s wrong with Basement Jaxx, BoA, and BT? :)

ern, there’s nothing wrong with that. I’ve found that despite the composition of my collection… i end up gravitating back to house and trance to this day. (no, the dayglo pants have gone to goodwill, thankyouverymuch)

although my favorite on the bt et album is actually track 3… and I really love 10.

I’m just glad that 40% of your top 10 is from my collection. Makes me feel special.

Baby if it means anything to you that mean little bastard Casey Casem never dedicated any song to me either, yet I always felt special when ever that lady would say mike on Romper Room at the end :)

I’m so happy to hear that someone else made lists like I did. I used to listen to Casey Kasem’s Top 40 and write down the entire Top 40 songs each week. I also created my own record label of artists, and picked out actual new singles for them, and tracked the progress of the songs on the Top 40 each week. Sad, but true.

i have the 10GB ipod.

it only has one bad feature: it’s not a 20GB ipod.

and i had to “reset” it last week for the first time. other than that, no complaints.

mine is filled with clash albums and such, however. and no J-pop. would consider shonen knife… oh, have Weather Report and Jaco Pastorius…for those aged jazz hipsters amongst you.

Often I wonder what we have in common, my old friend, but then I saw your list…BoA, Utada Hikaru, Onitsuka Chihiro, BT…and then I remembered: we have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in common. Go figure.

Don’t worry Ern… 2/3rds of my music in my car is JPop (to the displeasure of my passengers). Current #1 on my playlist count is “Simple and Clean (PlanitB Remix)” by Utada Hikaru. I guess I really am an egg…

Amazon-style: Customers who liked Utada Hikaru’s “Simple and Clean (PlanitB Remix)” also liked Utada Hikaru’s “Distance (MFlo Remix)”, available for a limited time here.

We lucky kids in Atlanta get a weekly JPop show on a college radio station: Nippon Music Champ. It’s clever and kitchy, but it ain’t something I’d be able to take regularly. Didn’t know it was so popular. Breakbeats forever! (i really dig yer site, ernie)

I do not know one song from that list. Not even a single one. What does that say about me?

Ruben - you probably know #1… it’s Joss Stone singing a cover of the song by The White Stripes “Fell in Love With a Boy,” although it’s the soul version.

The *gay* soul version, Ernie. The original was “Fell in Love with A Girl”. :)

check out various Johnny Budz (WKTU) remixes for tasty music — jpop is fine and all, but i kinda like being able to sing along. not only am i a *really* bad baritone, i don’t speak japanese.

i love sushi and eat like a sumo star. that’s about as japanese as i get.
