yahoo! observation #1

This place is pretty decked out. A gym! Ping-pong tables! Free coffee!

That said, the area I work in is eerily quiet: much more than the raucous, cliched first dot-com I worked for, even quieter than the conservative telecommunications company I used to work at. I mean, sure, there is an inflatable Godzilla or a company beach ball here and there. But for the most part, everyone is in total concentration, the sound of typing and an occasional sound of an Instant Message a couple of cubicles away. I almost feel like I’m typing too loud.

It’s like working in a library. A very hip, purple and yellow themed library.

Purple and yellow? And no inflatable furniture or dizzying spirals painted on the walls?

Actually, I think you should personally start wearing more purple and yellow. It’d suit you.

It still sounds a heck of a lot more exciting than my office! Or any office I’ve ever worked in, for that matter! :)

smg: Is this the part where I mention that I used to work at Yahoo and now I work at Google?

FC: You know what the funny thing is?

I ACTUALLY HAVE THE GIANT FOAM COWBOY HAT THAT YOU SPEAK OF. It was one of the things that was already in my cubicle when I “moved in.”

And Karsh - do paintings of spirals count? Because my building has that as well. It’s pretty crazy. One of these days I’ll actually stop looking at the contrasting colors and get some work done.

(Hello, Yahoo! employers reading this weblog! I am just kidding, of course)

Ernie I dare to to stand up sometime during the day and say in a loud voice “I’m a banana” (like the banana did in the rejected video). Just to introduce yourself to your new work mates.

Hey, I work for the publisher of the For Dummies series of books, and my office is yellow and purple too! After a while, your eyes adjust and you return to hating your life. Congrats, though, Ernie!

Ernie, you ROCK!!! I wish someone would let me touch a computer (for the purposes of code) in an office building! as it stands now, I have to set up IIS on my pathetic little workstation. I feel confident, however, that no one in my IT Dept. could find my little practice sites if I gave them the path…

Roy (IT Guru), just kidding :)
What would be even cooler is if the wall spun on it’s side, so that it had a faux-60’s mind control look to it.

Groovy, baby!

funny, i had to read this to my partner. he worked at yahoo when it was a wild and crazy place with less than 300 employees and lotsa fun, noise, people in PJs and hours (before the limits were imposed) of pinball - we even had to buy a table he got so addicted. this was back in the first campus. well, he went back last year for a special project for about 2 months and, not because it’s not a nice place to work now, but because it’s so different, he couldn’t hack it and quit before the project was even done.

the new campus is crazy, like a freakin mall yes?

anyway, have fun!

Hey Ernie: Building B, third floor. Turn right from the stairs (the stairs near the lobby) and see the big red Haring-esque painting of the Yahoo ‘Y’? I painted that!

Well, me and three other folks in UI, but yeah. Employee-created art is cool.

good stuff! lots of my friends are getting gigs at yahoo and ebay — and coming from their mostly laid-off situations and companies that were dying on the vine…they’re pretty shocked at the stability and upbeat moods at companies like yahoo and ebay.

have fun!

And to think, your employment occurs at the time when the Yahoo! Dominoes applet started messing up.

Coincidence? I think not.

Am I the only one who is having problems with Ernie’s style sheets lately? Especially in Mozilla. Everything is all styleless and plain.

It’s, like, so 1994.
