yahoo observation #2

I still like it here. But no one smokes.

As a matter of fact, I am convinced that of the couple thousand employees that work in this office, there are only four of us that smoke, three of which are us web contractors.

It’s the most noticeable during lunchtime, when I’m outside the building puffing on a cigarette, and I look across the courtyard and stare at the athletic employees playing full-court basketball. And volleyball. And the dozens of employees running on treadmills, viewable through the glass windows of the gym. Sipping their oatmeal through their pruple and yellow water bottles.

While I slowly die of lung cancer. Yes, I realize.

Last week at work, I forgot to bring my lighter. No problem, I think to myself. I’ll go to the gift shop.

Ernie: Hi, do you guys have any lighters?
Gift shop attendant: Nope.
Ernie: How about matches?
GSA: Sorry. Feel free to look around, though.

Looking around the gift shop, I find the following: bottled juices, candy bars, a plethora of stuffed animals wearing corporate insignia, a delightful greeting card of a cat hanging from a tree branch with the caption “HANG IN THERE,” and a box full of glowsticks. But no lighters.

What kinda corporate gift shop has GLOWSTICKS, but no lighters? I mean, what if someone has to light candles on a birthday cake? Maybe everyone here just turns the lights off in a conference room and they throw an impromptu rave.

Actually, that wouldn’t surprise me too much.

I knew it. This explains so much about how Yahoo’s gone down the toilet over the past few years. Just think, Ernie, you could bring back the Glory that Was Yahoo! All you need are a few matches.

So are all of those athletic employees fun to watch? Lots of cuties out there playing shirtless?

Post some pictures! :)

Don’tcha know - if you don’t provide lighters or matches, your employees are less likely to turn to arson when they become disgruntled ;)

that’s why i always have backup lighters in my bag (they are so bad, that nobody would like to keep them). ever tried to light cigarette with a microwave? :)

Maybe they’re hoping you’ll enter some super creative altered state induced by nicotine withdrawl. Thats just my paranoid “corporate manipulation” take on it.

Maybe matches and cigarette lighters are on the list of “non approved items” that building security won’t allow in and you’ve just been sneaking by up to now, but just wait, you’ll walk in and every alarm in the place will go off and they will strip you down in front of everyone and do an orifice search and THEN they will find your lighter and you’ll have to get a doctor’s permission slip to pin to your shirt and wear the lighter on a string around your neck so that everyone can see it at all times and they will play basketball and eat oatmeal with looks of pity and disgust thrown toward you.

Or maybe I’ve just been traumatized by my last few trips through airport security…but I don’t even HAVE a lighter.

Basketball courts, workout machines….. that alone is worth working for Yahoo. Oh my.

Maybe you should try the emergency survival kit for the building. That should have some matches or something. You, the new employee rummaging through the emergency supplies, frantically trying to light a cigarette makes quite a humorous picture in my head right now.

Side comment: your archived post about Coco Lee….come on! You KNOW she grew up here, and that she wouldn’t be speaking broken English! I can suspend disbelief for only so long, Hsiung….

Yahoo, schmahoo. I’m breaking out in purple hives just thinking about it.

oh, and sherri…that rant about the strip searching was funny but i really want to know why you suspect Ernie might have a lighter in an orifice. has anyone here ever hid any matches or lighters in any orifice? that’s just plain odd. really odd.
